THE WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT

Over 3 in every 5 people don’t have clean water.

More than 23 million people in Uganda do not have clean water. Much of the water in Uganda is open water and swampland, and shared with animals. It’s the type of water which many families use for domestic use like drinking and cooking.

Most likely that child you see with a big stomach is not suffering from obesity. In most cases those are signs of bilharzias, a waterborne disease.

Women gather up their children to walk miles in search for drinking water. Their feet are gnarled and calloused: a result of thousands of miles walked barefoot over rocks and mud. With babies strapped to their backs, their brightly colored skirts sway and their knees quiver and brace under the weight of water and children. Most balance pails on their heads, while some grip 80 pounds of water with sweaty palms, a bright yellow 5-gallon Jerry Can in each hand.

Some days they need to wait with many more others in need of the water. Their options is to skip the wait and collect contaminated water from a pond.

Their other thought is how they should utilize the water for the day. Should they water their garden which supplies them food? Should they wash their clothes? Should they cook a meal? Or is this drinking water?

In the villages families still use open bushes as toilets. This further put their lives in danger.

Over 4,500 children in Uganda under 5 die a year from diarrhea.

Caused by dirty water and poor toilets.

THE SNAPI ZERA INTEVENTIONS

To start with, SNAPI ZERA plans to drill a borehole on the compound from which it will be pumped to a water tank tower to supply clean water to the child mothers and their babies on the compound. This same water tower will connect to a stand tap from which surrounding homesteads shall be fetching clean water for their use.

We are sensitizing the community about the need to have pit latrines and giving best practices on hygiene practices. Our intention is to eliminate hygiene related challenges in the community.
